How do I treat red eye irritation?

I accidently overused a set of my soft contact lenses. i have new ones but i'm currently just going without contacts because my eyes get a little red still because of the irritation they suffered with my old ones. I've looked up symptoms and small remedies online, and my eyes do not hurt or feel overly dry as some major concerns show. I'll most likely see an optometrist soon if they don't get any better, but in the meantime has anybody experienced this? Do you know how long it lasts or anything?
